The warning in Proverbs 14.15 says don’t believe everything you hear. Instead, think critically! As such, critical thinking brings wise choices.
The shallow-minded believe everything they hear, but critical thinking produces discernment. Proverbs 14.15 paraphrase
The Precept Explained
Who believes anything they’re told? Usually, a child.
In fact, it’s childishly naive to make rapid choices absent the facts.
That said, it’s much easier to simply take things as they appear.
As it turns out, in Proverbs 14.15 we learn that believing everything isn’t just for kids! Unfortunately, it’s a trait of the shallow-minded. Thus, adults – like me!
Critical Thinking
For starters, the way out of shallow-mindedness is to learn to think critically.
As such, I ask questions to determine the facts. Also, I explore options to identify root cause. Then, I develop options as to how to proceed.
As a result, critical thinking brings several benefits. For example:
First, I’m self-controlled, Proverbs 12.16
Second, I handle what I know appropriately, Proverbs 13.16
Third, I’m more self-aware, Proverbs 14.8
Fourth, I’m thoughtful about life choices, Proverbs 14.15
Fifth, I look ahead to avoid problems, Proverbs 27.12
Therefore, foresight recognizes “there’s something else here.” And, I take appropriate action rather than continue on into the problem.
Above all, critical thinking brings wise choices.
Added together, a series of wise choices is evidence of good judgment.
More fundamentally, good judgment is based on a just character.
A careful approach to life requires me to be attentive and thoughtful as I make decisions.
Apply this Today!
I can reduce the shallowness of my decisions. However, I must look for other viewpoints. Then, I must reflect deeply on those options.
Unfortunately, the shallow ignore warnings. So, don’t be that person! Instead, look ahead. Then, take appropriate action.
