One outcome of a precept-driven life is thoughtfulness. In fact, that careful approach to life brings me protection, peace, and divine confidence. Therefore, deep thoughtfulness is a source of confidence.
The Foundation
In Proverbs Chapter 3, Solomon argues that a careful, thoughtful approach to life is of great value because it helps me make good choices to avoid negative outcomes.
More specifically, in Proverbs 3.21 he argues that the precepts are one foundation for thoughtfulness. Those precepts are contained in the wisdom literature.
As a result, I base my actions on guidance that’s fundamental and that’s true.
Additionally, in Proverbs 3.13-18 he argues that the precepts are building blocks of personal values that are life itself.
Most basically then, a character guided by sound content, plus clearly established personal values, enjoys a number of benefits. For example, protection, peace, and confidence.
Confidence
Self-confidence is a great asset. In fact, here in Proverbs 3.21-26 confidence is an outcome of thoughtfulness.
Actually, confidence is defined as the state of being certain and believing I will act in a way that’s right.
Primarily, as a person of faith, I should derive hope or confidence from my relationship with God. For examples, see Psalm 78.7 and Proverbs 3.26.
Conversely, it’s foolish to be overly self-confident, thus arrogant. For examples, see Psalm 49.13 and Ecclesiastes 7.25. Ultimately, arrogance is destructive.
I have confidence in my choices when I’m careful and deliberative. Additionally, I develop confidence when my choices are based on sound personal values.
Therefore, deep thoughtfulness is a source of confidence.
Leadership Insight
Confidence is about leadership traits such as careful deliberation, personal values, and deep thoughtfulness.
However, confidence isn’t simply about leadership charisma, or an uninterrupted string of wins, or a forceful personality. It’s not about always getting my way.
In addition, confidence that’s based on thoughtfulness doesn’t ignore the importance of sensing and feeling.
In fact, thoughtful confidence doesn’t have to be cold and calculating!
Thus, there’s hope for leaders, like me, who tend to be more introverted and thoughtful. Conversely, we’re less dynamic and energetic.
Hopefully, there’s more than one style of leadership that can be successful!
Where does this leave us? Most basically, I believe, a successful leadership style is grounded in the leader’s own self-awareness.
Then, that self-awareness must be combined with a just character built off a clearly-established set of personal values.
I choose reverence as the bedrock for my personal values.
Confidence is important for a leader. And, thoughtfulness fuels self-confidence because the leader is basing decisions on careful deliberation. Therefore, deep thoughtfulness is a source of confidence.
