Proverbs 23.2-3 is a warning. Specifically, to be self-aware and discerning in social settings. Remember, discern before you eat!
Be self-aware enough to know your own weaknesses. Also, be discerning enough to recognize deceit. Proverbs 23.2-3 paraphrase
The Precept Explained
I must control my desires when the opportunity is “too good to be true”!
Hence, the warning in Proverbs 23.2-3.
Therefore, interactions up the chain of command, or with potential clients, require lots of emotional intelligence from me.
In fact, I must prepare myself beforehand to control what I know about my weak points. Thus, be self-aware.
At the same time, I’m to be discerning about the intentions of others. Actually, the prior verse emphasizes the importance of discernment.
As such, Proverbs 23.1 is a warning about going to see the boss. Specifically, it says to think before you meet! Thus, don’t walk into the meeting unprepared.
Consider carefully what’s on the agenda before meeting with a leader. Proverbs 23.1 paraphrase
Then, I must be especially careful when my desires are matched up with opportunities that may have strings attached. So, discern before you eat!
Self-Awareness and Self-control
The “if” in Proverbs 23.2 precedes a self-description. Thus, the assumption is I’m self-aware enough to know where I might mess up.
After that, I must exhibit self-control. In fact, self-awareness is of limited value if I have the same uncontrolled reaction I always have!
Self-awareness is of limited value unless I intentionally pair it with self-control!
Fortunately, for me anyway, being self-aware is a trait that can be developed. As far as self-control, well …
For instance, in Proverbs 14.8 I’m instructed to think critically so I can discern where I’m going. Thus, I’m to purposefully build self-awareness.
Apply this Today!
First, I must be discerning enough to prepare myself so I don’t walk in cold to a meeting.
Second, I must be self-aware enough to recognize where I’m likely to stumble if I’m not watchful.
Third, I must be self-controlled enough to not be taken in. Instead, I must rely on my discerning character to keep me from being oversold.
