Leadership Lessons: Solomon
Impactful leaders excel at casting a vision and getting help from others to accomplish that vision. Then, the organization flourishes.
Receiving Feedback
How are viewed as a leader?
Similarly, what terms define your leadership style?
Well, one way to get feedback is a 360-degree review. Or, you could retire and listen to co-workers!
Seriously, leaders get unsolicited feedback from peers or board members as they observe you.
Often, I’ve found, their comments are insightful and encouraging. Especially when preceded by “however, you should consider …” Why? Because that’s a diplomatic way to point out areas for improvement.
Getting Help From Others
Now, Solomon received encouraging feedback from a peer in Second Chronicles 2.12 after he:
1). Initially, cast a grand vision for the future, 2.4-5.
2). Then, expressed humility, in 2.6.
3). Also, asked for assistance, 2.7-9. And,
4). Finally, agreed to invest in the project, in 2.10.
Unsurprisingly, the response he received was immediate, 2.14-16. Well, as immediate as was possible before social media!
Leadership Insight
Leaders want to be known for grasping what’s essential. Moreover, they want others to notice them making sense of things by thinking deeply and clearly.
So, this example from Solomon is a process for using these two leadership traits.
First, express a clear purpose as leader.
Second, invite others to join with you by asking for help.
Third, show how you’ll be personally involved in the vision.
Asking and Receiving
In fact, “send me now …” Second Chronicles 2.7 and “I have sent …” in 2.13 is the ask-receive precept.
So, as a leader, ask specifically. And, expect to receive support from others with whom you have a relationship.
It’s important for a leader to develop a supportive network to tap into when needing assistance.
In short, leadership influence depends on:
Enlisting others in the vision, and
Personal investment in the vision.
Apply This Today!
Impactful leaders enlist others who have the will and the capacity to support their vision.
Next, to recognize what’s essential, an impactful leader does the hard work of clarifying his or her own values.
Then, that leader works with team members to carry out a vision that’s based on shared values. So, be that leader!
So, are you getting help from others? And, will you ask? Also, are you clear about what’s important to you?
