Leadership Lessons: Solomon
How do I behave as a leader, now that I’m in charge? Well, key traits include acting decisively and fairly while being insightful about what’s going on around me.
A good character protects me. Whereas, a bad character does not. First Kings 1.52 paraphrase
The Story
The first 100 days is a common time block for early actions in a new administration. Often, those actions include administrative appointments, listening tours, and changed reporting structures.
Likewise, the opening chapters of First Kings describe the early days of Solomon’s reign.
1). He first dealt with a trouble-maker, First Kings 1.50-51.
2). Then, he showed mercy to the one who tried to take his job, 1.52-53.
Now That I’m in Charge
Unfortunately, the kindness wasn’t reciprocated. Instead, the person wanted a favor, First Kings 1.13-24. In First Kings 2.22 Solomon exhibited quick thinking in seeing through the scheme. So, he moved forward quickly to correct the problem.
Thus, we see that Solomon could think on his feet, discern intentions, and act decisively to hold others accountable.
At the same time, Solomon balanced justice and mercy, as he observed in Proverbs 21.3.
Leadership Insight
Obviously, impactful leaders are decisive and quick thinking, as seen here in the life of Solomon.
Evidently, Solomon moved without consulting others because the offender acted unreasonably.
Impactful leaders act quickly to address a breach of trust because failing to do so endangers morale.
