How are believers to live, given the expectation of growth through difficulty that builds ministry skills? Well, in First Peter we learn how spiritual growth brings renewal.
Key Passage: 1 Peter 1.13-25
Believers must understand that spiritual growth brings renewal. Plus, that growth builds ministry skills.
That said, how are believers to live, given this expectation of growth through difficulty?
Well, in First Peter we learn how to live because the “Wherefore” in First Peter 1.13 signals a change in direction that focuses on expectations.
We understand how difficult circumstances produce endurance and a tested character that exhibits hope. Romans 5.3-4 paraphrase
Some Insights
Actually, this teaching in First Peter Chapter 1 reveals several thing to us:
First, mental renewal brings serious mindedness, First Peter 1.13 because I consider my time perspective – “hope to the end …” – meaning an eternal view.
Second, we’re to live in hope, First Peter 1.13 and 1.21, “…hope to the end for grace…”
Third, we’re to live a separated life because we’re accountable, First Peter 1.14-17.
Fourth, our salvation must impact the way we treat others, First Peter 1.22, “… love each other …”
Thus, renewal is spiritual and mental – it’s both head and heart!
Hope Defined
Now, the noun elpis is translated hope, in First Peter 1.3, 1.21, and 3.15. Basically, it means a confident expectation.
Additionally, the verb elpizo is translated hope in First Peter 1.13 and trusted in First Peter 3.5.
Thus, in the face of difficulty, believers trust God because He’s the source of their hope.
“… (believers) should grasp the hope that’s set before them …” Hebrews 6.18 paraphrase
So, What’s The Point Here?
Well, in First Peter 1.18-25 he drives home the point that our salvation was costly. Thus, don’t take it lightly!
In addition, we must differentiate between the temporal and the eternal.
As such, my time perspective must not focus solely on the present challenges of life because spiritual renewal should prepare me for the eternal.
Apply These Precepts
Spiritual growth brings renewal. However, I must choose the hope that’s available to me from God.
Also, serious-mindedness doesn’t mean dull! However, it does mean to be alert, watchful, and aware because that’s how learning takes place.
Remember, silver and gold are corruptible, but not so our salvation!
