The Precept Explained
Basing my life on the universal precepts brings me several practical benefits. It’s good for me to follow these ancient and unchanging directives because they tell me how I should live and how I should lead.
My goals should be to know wisdom and to build insight because I deeply value knowledge, all of which are deeply spiritual.
When I actively seek to absorb the precepts into my character I receive back wisdom in the form of practical insight. I also become wise and discerning.
The precepts bring insight. The precepts, when absorbed into my life, make me discerning.
Knowledge is Power
There’s an old saying “knowledge is power.” That saying seems to be rooted in Ecclesiastes 8.1, paraphrased below.
Solomon asked “Who is wise?” He then answers his own question saying the wise exhibit wisdom, as found in the universal precepts, producing self confidence.
“Who is wise? Who knows the true meaning of things? Wisdom makes your face shine and gives boldness to your appearance.” ECCL 8.1 paraphrase
Leadership Insight
For a leader, practical insight and discernment are two critical skills.
To be effective at making decisions I must be analytical. I must be able to see between the lines to know clearly what is and what is not.
A leader needs wisdom in the form of practical insights into the true nature of things.
Additionally, the leader must be wise in the form of interpersonal and situational discernment. This is the ability to sense motives of others and to see around the corner regarding possible outcomes.
Therefore, most fundamentally, a leader needs discernment to tell what’s right and what’s wrong.
Unfortunately, the capability to discern right from wrong seems to not be the norm given the number of ethical lapses we witness among leaders in government, industry, and in the clergy.

I must be intentional about understanding the universal precepts. The precepts bring insight and discernment.
I must be intentional about personal and professional growth.
The result of that intentionality for a leader is practical insight and discernment that produce sound decisions.
