It’s great to know and pursue our priorities. But where do they come from? Let’s discuss the source of our priorities.

Priorities and Passion

Personal growth consultants have much to say about identifying and pursuing priorities. We hear about hacks to best focus our time so we can act on what’s most essential — right now!

Often, these conversations about priorities are paired with how to find our life’s passion.

By the way, what comes first, priorities or passion?

Identifying What’s Essential

Ok, I get the importance of priorities. Yes, we must identify what’s essential.

But, the question remains about the source of our priorities. That is, how do we determine what’s most essential at a given point in time?

One widely-used method for priority identification is the Eisenhower Matrix. In short, it presents four options for any activity: Do, Delay, Delegate, and Delete. You know, the Four D’s!

The Role of Purpose

All that said, I propose that our life priorities identify what’s really most essential when:

First, they’re grounded in clarity about WHO we are.

Second, that self-awareness helps us recognize our purpose for this season of life.

Thus, what we choose as life priorities are activities that drive us toward our life’s purpose — our WHY.

Know your WHO. Do your WHY. Be your God-created self! proverbsforprofessionals.net

The Precept

From Proverbs 16.22 we learn that our ability to grasp what’s essential is a life-giving spring within each of us.

Conversely, we can decide to be foolishly unteachable! Gee, what a choice!

Grasping what’s essential, hence establishing priorities, is life-giving because it fills us with purpose and goal clarity.

The source of our priorities is clarity about life’s purpose. In short, WHY drives WHAT.

Here are two fundamental questions for acting on our priorities:

1). Do I need to be doing this?

2). Do I need to be doing this right now?
