Impactful leaders know they must use what you’ve got in terms of accumulated experiences. However, they don’t become overconfident.
The Precept Explained
What happens when a leader isn’t a learner?
What’s the outcome when they’re too self-consumed to learn from experience?
How does it play out when a leader is convinced that the rules don’t apply to them?
Well, one outcome is that the arrogant character that ignores the rules picks-up other unhealthy traits. For example, bribes are acceptable. As is extortion.
When it’s all about me, I make lifestyle excuses and spend the embezzled funds.
Root Cause
When you read these stories in the business press you wonder how it went on for so long.
Well, it went on for so long because the leader didn’t know right from wrong. Moreover, the enablers around the leader facilitated the crimes.
Actually, Isaiah 33.15 uses the same Hebrew word “oppression” that’s used in Proverbs 28.16. Hence, the prophet’s comment about “closing the eyes from seeing evil.”
Thus, criminal behavior goes on because it’s ignored!
Leadership Insight
Thankfully, there’s a way forward.
In Psalm 78.70-72 we read that David was an impactful leader. Why? Because his integrity and experiential insight guided him.
Additionally, David recognized a clear calling to leadership.
As a result, his leadership was impactful.
David led effectively by combining integrity with experiential insight. Psalm 78.70-72 paraphrase
So, be that leader! Lead using integrity, transparency, and honesty.
Later, God told Solomon that his father David was a person of integrity, First Kings 9.4. Then, Solomon concluded that integrity is rooted in a just character, Proverbs 20.7.
Therefore, it’s important to use what you’ve got in regard to accumulated insight.
Impactful leaders are guided by the integrity of a sound character.
Apply This Today!
Learning from experience is a deliberate choice of an impactful leader.
Likewise, operating with integrity is a deliberate choice of an impactful leader.
So, can a lack of integrity be repaired? Perhaps, but ingrained beliefs are tough to dislodge because they’re part of who I am as a leader.
