Now, according to Proverbs 9.12, the gift of being wise is the satisfaction received from character transformation.

Truly, my life has value to the extent I recognize and accomplish my life purpose. However, to be equipped for that purpose, I must be transformed by being precept-driven.

The Essentials

The Proverbs are a collection of precepts or parables. As such, they’re part of the larger body of wisdom literature.

So what? Well, according to Proverbs 10.8, those who soak up the precepts are wise-hearted. That is, they have a wise character.

Similarly, in Proverbs 9.1-4, wisdom calls to us. Then, those who answer, Proverbs 9.12, are called wise. In short, absorbing the precepts of wisdom makes me wise.

Again, so what? Well, the “so what” is the outcomes of a precept-driven life. Those outcomes, or gifts, are scattered throughout Proverbs. Specifically, outcomes of a wise life include:

1). discretion,

2). discernment,

3). critical thinking,

4). subtilty,

5). humility,

6). influence,

7). greater capacity,

8). deep thoughtfulness,

9). good judgment,

10). justice and equity,

11). clarity of life purpose,

12). faith,

13). an abundance mindset, and

14). a growth mindset.

Actually, that’s quite a list of changes to my character!

Quickly, let’s look at the last two. First, an abundance mindset means I’m generous to God and to others. Second, a growth mindset means that I believe I can grow. In turn, that growth equips me to accomplish my divinely-given life purpose.

Ok, but the title of the post says “gift” – singular. Thus, what’s the gift of being wise?

Proverbs 9.12 says when I’m wise it’s for my own personal benefit. Therefore, the gift of being wise is the deep, personal satisfaction I receive from my character being transformed.

Apply This Today!

Remember, wisdom calls to me, but doesn’t give orders.

Hence, becoming precept-driven is a deliberate choice I make. Or, I don’t make.

Moreover, as great as character transformation is, living a divinely-given life purpose is of eternal value.
