In Proverbs 23.4-5 I’m warned that my dominant passion must not be to get rich because wealth is fleeting.

Moreover, a key aspect of self-awareness is insight about my own motives and values.

Hence the question: “What’s Driving My Actions?”

The Context

This warning is set in the context of a dinner meeting with a leader.

First, is the instruction about discernment in Proverbs 23.1. Thus, I’m to be careful when dealing with those in authority.

Actually, a discerning character helps me correctly recognize the intentions of others.

Consider carefully what’s on the agenda before meeting with a leader. Proverbs 23.1 paraphrase

Second, discernment is paired with self-awareness, in Proverbs 23.2. Thus, I’m self-aware enough to know where I might stumble. After that, I must exhibit self-control.

Be self-aware enough to know your own weaknesses. Also, be discerning enough to recognize deceit. Proverbs 23.2-3 paraphrase

Third, Proverbs 23.3 addresses social awareness because I’m aware of the motives of others. Afterward, I take appropriate action based on that awareness.

Therefore, I pair self-awareness and self-control with social awareness and appropriate responses.

In short, I must display emotional intelligence if I am to function effectively.
