Everybody does it is an excuse used by…everybody! So, what’s the problem? Well, read this post to learn what the problem is!

The Essentials

What an excuse. “Everybody does it” is designed to side-step accountability for my behavior.

So, who cares if I use this excuse? What’s the danger?

Actually, the problem is there’s no end point. That is, no clear line to cross that says “stay here – don’t go farther.” For example, if a little pride is Ok, then how much more before it turns into destructive arrogance?

Worse yet, this excuse may allow my integrity to slip, a little at a time. You know, like a waistline expanded during the pandemic!

Common practice may not always have consequences, but “everybody does it” isn’t an acceptable response when outcomes are bad! proverbsforprofessionals.net

The Precept

In Proverbs 30.11-14 we read of list of social ills.

Maybe it’s simply an older person complaining about the younger generation! if so, that type of complaining is an ancient practice.

Seriously, the destructive attitudes listed in the passage are: ingratitude, self-righteousness, arrogance, and lack of compassion.

The repeated phrase “there is a generation” suggests, to me, that everybody does it!

Precept: Just because something is common practice doesn’t mean that it’s right! proverbsforprofessionals.net

Apply This Today!

For a leader, when (not if!) you choose to push boundaries, admit the risks you are taking.

Moreover, call it what it really is.

And, if things blow up, take responsibility for the outcome.
