In some of His last words to the disciples, Christ reminds them of His love for them. Then, He commanded them to love each other.
Key Passage: John 15.9–14
Mutual support is vital for any ministry effort. Thus, in some of His last words to the disciples, Christ reminded them that He cared deeply for them.
Then, He commanded the disciples to be loving. For examples, see John 13.34-35, John 15.12, and John 15.17.
Finally, Christ’s prayer in John 17 closes with the request that God’s love live in the disciplines, John 17.26.
Obedience and Loving Each Other
Moreover, Christ says obedience is evidence of love. For instance, see John 14.21 and 14.23 and John 15.14.
And, that obedience allows believers to abide in Christ’s love, John 15.9-10.
Abiding empowers me to live a productive life!
For emphasis, Christ used the word picture of a vine and branches growing out of that vine to describe a life of abiding, John 15.1-9.
Additionally, abiding brings the ability to ask and receive. Hence, it’s the most basic form of sowing and reaping.
Christ told Peter, “If you love me, teach the believers.” John 21.15-17 paraphrase
Obedience and Abiding
Now, notice the repetition in John 15, because it’s an important component of the teaching:
1). Three times believers are commanded to be loving.
2). Three times we’re told that obedience is evidence of our loving God.
3). At least four times Christ uses the phrase “abide in Me …”
In fact, the repetition here drives home the connection between love, obedience, and abiding. Moreover, we see this truth repeated in John’s epistle:
“Christ commanded us to express our love for God by loving each other.” 1 John 4.21 paraphrase.
Some Insights
Basically, the depth of my spiritual life is an indicator of how closely I am abiding.
Additionally, my treatment of others is another indicator of my spirituality.
Wherefore, I can love because I am being transformed and empowered by abiding in Christ.
Apply These Precepts
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to go through the motions of obedience without genuinely loving God. Why? Because at times God places me in situations where love and obedience are tough.
Likewise, being loving demands deep commitment due to the complicated nature of human relationships.
Remember, at times, I’m the one who’s hard to love!
