There are lots of definitions for the word “spiritual.” In this blog post I briefly discuss what being spiritual means to me.

Some Meanings

Being spiritual can have a variety of meanings. In fact, I suspect the term varies a bit across cultures and even across different areas of the same country.

Here are some possible ways to understand what being spiritual means:

1). It can mean being at one with nature.

2). Being in touch with your deepest inner self.

3).Having innate insight or sensitivity.

4). Connecting to a religion or set of life-style practices.

5). Shunning anything that is materialistic or that is temporal.

6). Holding firmly, perhaps stubbornly, to any strongly-help set of beliefs or values.

Certainly there are any number of other ways to define this term.

We are best positioned to care for others when are first at peace with WHO we are and with WHY we are here. Both that WHO and WHY are given to us by our creator! proverbsforprofessionals.net

The Impact

With all that variety in meanings, being spiritual sounds like something that’s uniquely personal. Actually, in one sense, that’s true.

Thus, we each must determine IF and HOW spirituality will (or will not) have an impact on how we live.

Conversely, there’s great diversity in meanings. Hence, just about anything goes.

So then, we could be left with a fairly sarcastic answer to this attempt to define spirituality. Which is? If being spiritual can mean anything, then it really means nothing at all!

Again, ask yourself about impact.

Very often, our personal spirituality drives our ability to relate to and care for others. Therefore, it’s important to recognize the impact of our spirituality on our ability to form impactful relationships.

Spirituality and Leadership

Obviously, spirituality will impact those who are leaders.

Ultimately, leaders must decide about their own spirituality.

Primarily, that decision is about reverence. Secondarily, it’s about linking their spirituality to their work as a leader.

There are lot’s of people want to have face time with a leader. However, the leader’s good judgment for those meetings is from the Lord. Proverbs 29.26 paraphrase proverbsforprofessionals.net

What Being Spiritual Means To Me

This blog focuses on the precepts from the Book of Proverbs. As such, being spiritual, for me, doesn’t line up very well with any of the items on the numbered list above.

Most specifically, my own spirituality, plus who I am as an individual, is connected directly to a personal relationship with the eternal God.

That relationship provides me access to the universal wisdom that’s found across all times and all cultures. I share that wisdom in this blog and on social media by way of LinkedIn.

Some Takeaways

I get it that being spiritual is, ultimately, a personal choice.

However, for me, that choice is tied up in a personal relationship with the eternal God.

Moreover, it’s really nice to understand the eternal precepts as shared in Proverbs. However, I believe it’s most critical that we know the God of scripture in a deeply personal way.
