Solomon’s temple is a great example of having a big vision for a divine project. The project mirrored the king’s deep spirituality.

Details, Details!
Large scale building projects are challenging. Why? Because they involve huge amounts of planning, resources, (e.g., labor, materials), and extend across multiple years.
Similarly, the building of the temple by Solomon was certainly massive.
To read more, the specifics are in First Kings Chapters Five through Seven. And, the parallel passages are in Second Chronicles Chapters Two through Five. Those chapters describe, in detail, the scope of the project.
For example, it took over seven years, required 10’s of thousands of skilled laborers, and was challenging in terms of the logistics of materials movement. Moreover, Solomon used gold abundantly!
Finally, the historical account shows attention to detail by listing measurements and describing all the contents of the temple.

Leadership Insight
Now, from the historical record we get insights into what Solomon knew before starting the project. Also, we see what he learned as the project proceeded.
Like what? Well, here are a few takeaways from this project:
1). Be purpose-driven. He was determined to build the temple, as described in First Kings 5.5 and Second Chronicles 2.1.
2). Know the right time. Solomon was king for four years before beginning the work. Also, during that time, he built a reputation and enjoyed peace, see First Kings 5.4. In short, he was famous, First Kings 4.34!
3). Build allies and gather resources. His alliance with King Hiram was significant because it brought raw materials, First Kings 5.1. Unsurprisingly, Solomon attracted wealth, see Second Chronicles 1.15.
4). Follow a detailed plan. The record in scripture is very specific. The project was carried out very deliberately.
5). Don’t miss the big picture! Solomon didn’t forget that this project wasn’t simply about a big building. Instead, it was to be the spiritual center for a nation, First Kings 6.11-13.

Being determined and focused isn’t an excuse for careless, rushed efforts.
The details of huge projects can distract us from what’s most essential. Thus, we need regular reminders of why the project began in the first place. Although details are important, purpose is most critical!
Above all, recognize your potential for long-term impact. In this case, the temple was the center of worship for approximately 400 years.
