Proverbs 11.5 observes the importance of my spiritual life in regard to life purpose. In fact, it says finding a purposeful life depends on my spirituality.

To find life purpose and clear direction, pursue righteousness. Otherwise, I risk failure. Proverbs 11.5 paraphrase

The Precept Explained

Precepts – as old as the hills! Proverbs 8.25

Spiritual integrity produces life purpose and clear direction, according to Proverbs 11.5.

Conversely, a life of focus and purpose is not self-determined!

Fact is, in scripture life purpose – being complete or “perfect” – is linked to reverence.

A Purposeful Life

The Hebrew word that’s translated upright, or sincere, or perfect is used in Proverbs 11.5.

Hence, the word indicates spiritual depth that brings me to a clear understanding of God’s purpose for me.

First, God’s expectation is that I stay in fellowship with Him and accomplish my life purpose. For two examples, see Genesis 17.1 and Deuteronomy 18.13.

Second, what God decides about my life direction is complete and dependable, Second Samuel 22.31 and Psalm 18.30.

Third, when I listen, God directs me into a life that’s perfect, Second Samuel 22.33, Psalm 18.32, and Proverbs 11.5. Additionally, that life is settled or established, Proverbs 2.21.

Fourth, God delights in those who are upright, Proverbs 11.20.

Fifth, when I recognize and follow God’s purpose for my life I enjoy good, Proverbs 28.10. Additionally, that good includes God’s protection, Proverbs 28.18.

In sum, what an incredible list of benefits that come from a purposeful life because it’s directed by God Himself!

As such, I reach my potential.

Who’s Life is It?

In contrast, I shouldn’t argue with God about His intentions for me. Or, about His expectations of me.

As such, Isaiah worded this precept in Isaiah 45.9: “Will the clay say (to the potter) – What are you making?”

Unfortunately, I’ve been guilty of asking this question myself!
