When a leader applies learning from prior experiences to make new connections, the leader is recognizing how insight enhances creativity.

The Precept Explained

What’s it mean to be creative?

Does it mean no logic or analysis?

Are musicians, craftsmen, and artists the only creatives?

Well, if the answer is Yes then there’s no hope for most of us!

Actually, Proverbs 3.19-20 explains creativity. As such, it’s the ability to identify patterns that are refreshing and nourishing.

However, I must balance the factual knowledge I have with practical application of those facts.

Hence, the importance of both knowing and doing.

Creativity sees new connections among existing elements. Then, it brings those new connections to life.

Insight Enhances Creativity

Now, these two verses in Proverbs 3 define applied wisdom. In other words, factual knowledge, verse 20, is combined with experiential insight, verse 19.

Moreover, according to Proverbs 2.6, knowledge and insight are free to everyone!

Thus, we all can be insightful, practical, and creative!

Leadership Insight

So, I get it. Being creative is narrowly interpreted by many.

In short, it’s viewed as new product development. Or, research breakthroughs. And, new ways to deliver solutions for complex problems.

Creativity in Practice

A leader can be creative in the way he/she approaches day-to-day challenges.

But, the key, as seen in Proverbs 3.19-20, is to use the experiential insight the leader already has.
