What Is Discernment?

So, what is discernment? Well, the dictionary says it’s perception and insight.

In short, discernment lets us look around corners. And, recognize motives that may not be readily apparent.

Most specifically, to work, discernment needs our integrity. How so? Read 1 Kings 3.9 where Solomon requested discernment so he could tell right from wrong.

Thus, for a leader like Solomon, being discerning is, most simply, knowing the right thing to do.

Then, I must act with integrity by doing that right thing!

Proverbs 16.21 teaches that the wise hearted are discerning. And, they’re growing in their knowledge of the world around them. In short, a precept-driven character can tell right from wrong. That’s the essence of discernment according to 1 Kings 3.9. proverbsforprofessionals.net

Some Ways to Build Discernment

In the Book of Proverbs, discernment walks beside wise counsel, critical thinking, and experiential insight. Therefore, to be discerning, I must be willing to seek out and listen to good advice. Next, I must do the hard work of thinking through what I’ve been told.

I pair that sound advice with what I’ve learned through life experiences. When we add the ability to make sense of things to this reasoning progression, we have the major components that fuel good judgment.

Consequently, forming good judgement requires discernment. Moreover, I become more discerning as I listen, observe, and make sense of what’s happening around me.

My study of Proverbs tells me these components rely on our ability to learn, over time, through reflection. Thus, there’s no substitute for lifetime learning.

So, where’s the emphasis among all these moving parts? My guess is that sense making – seeing how the pieces fit together – is a key factor in building discernment.

However, note that I’ve made no mention of being smart! This process is much more about heart than about head!

For a person of faith, asking in faith is certainly a way to become wiser. However, be prepared to hear back that we must make better use of what’s already revealed to, and provided to, us! proverbsforprofessionals.net
