Sometimes, I’m wrong even when I’m sure that I’m right! Here are some suggestions for side-stepping self-consumption.

The Essentials

Be honest. Ever been absolutely convinced you were right? But, found out you were wrong? I have! For example, when I’m too angry to listen to reason, say from my wife.

Why was I so wrong? Here are some possible reasons why:

First, I ignored the obvious.

Second, I lacked access to some key data.

Third, Conditions changed. However, I was unprepared to pivot when needed.

Certainly there are other reasons.

Self-consumption

Well then, what are some marks of being this blindly self consumed that I’m totally wrong?

1). I cannot be reasoned with. Thus, critical thinking is out the window.

2). I have access to, but ignore, wise counsel.

3). I mistakenly believe my motives are pure because I’ve been misled into believing a lie.

The Precept

Here’s some instruction from the wisdom found in the Book of Proverbs.

Both Proverbs 16.2 and Proverbs 21.2 warn us about self-consumption. Ultimately, that negative trait runs up against my personal accountability to God Himself.

Next, Proverbs 26.4-5 points out how impossible it is to reason with a person when he/she is foolishly overconfident.

Finally, Proverbs 28.11 notes how a discerning character can counteract destructive self-consumption.

The Precept: Refusing to be reasoned with is destructive. So, get a grip by accepting wise counsel. Proverbsforprofessionals.net

I’m sure that I’m right can be destructive. So, what’s the way out?

Well, I must be willing to accept the (remote) possibility that there is universal truth that conflicts with my narrow and shallow world view!

Then, I must consider how my life outcomes suggest that my repeated choices are less than optimal!

Now, a question. What reasoning practices enable you to consider views that are different from your own?
