Like it or not, at times, our biggest limitation is self-imposed! Let’s discuss another path.

Types of Limitations
It’s easy to list common limitations we believe are holding us back. For example, our family background, that is, too common, too backward. Or, a lack of – fill in the blank – native intelligence, athletic ability, good looks, or financial resources.
Regardless, those perceived limitations create in us a defeatist mindset. We don’t see a way forward. So what? The “so what” is we stay stuck right where we are. We see no growth path.

What’s bigger?
When we recognize the impact of our mindset, we’re on track to identify our biggest limitation. It’s ourself! Ugh!!
Our self-perceived limits may or may not be real. However, until we change how we perceive those challenges, we’ll never engage in problem solving. We don’t look for other options. Instead, we see only blockages that we cannot control.

A Personal Reflection
For better or worse, our mindset is strongly influenced by our family background. That said, we can choose a different path for our own life. However, getting there may be challenging!
I grew up with depression-era parents who were the product of rural poverty. They were honest, hard-working, and people of deep faith. However, their challenged upbringing dramatically impacted their perception of what was possible. And, what was not possible.
Their mindset influenced my self-worth, as well as what I believed was possible for my career. I’m not blaming them, but simply pointing out what I chose to believe about myself.
A midlife career change, after several difficult career moves, started me on the path of personal growth and a much-improved self-image. That personal change was slow and steady. There was no “light from heaven” moment for me!

Apply This Today!
We must not be our own, biggest limitation. Instead, we need an abundance mindset. Do it on purpose! When our thinking changes we will, in turn, positively impact our life outcomes.
One unfortunate option for living is to never move beyond our past. Thus, we never grow beyond who we are right now. A much more productive option is to envision a future self who is guided by, but not limited by, where we came from.
Our clarity of vision about who we can become must be paired with consistent, disciplined effort to pursue that vision of our future self.
A Question to Consider
What’s an example of how a significant mindset change had a positive impact on who you were and what you were able to accomplish in life?
